Whitetail Scent Glands: What Alberta Hunters Should Know

Sit in a bush pocket in the parkland WMUs northeast of Edmonton some cold November morning and watch a mature whitetail work the edge of a stubble field. He will stop, lift his nose, swing his head into the wind, and read more about that field in four seconds than you learned in four days of scouting. He is not looking for you. He is smelling for you, and he is smelling for every other deer that walked through since yesterday.

That is the frame I want you to start with. A whitetail is a nose-first animal. Its eyes are good at catching motion and poor at resolving detail, its ears are excellent, and its nose is the sense that makes the final decision. Understanding the glands a deer uses to leave and read scent will not make you invisible, but it will change where you sit, how you walk in, and what you make of the sign you find.

A caution before the biology

I want to be straight with you about two things.

First, a lot of what gets written about deer glands in hunting media is repeated rather than researched. Some of it comes from solid work — there is peer-reviewed literature on deer skin glands and odour communication, including recent research examining prion protein distribution in the scent glands and vomeronasal organ of white-tailed and mule deer. Plenty of the rest is folk wisdom that has been copied from article to article for thirty years. Where the science is thin, I will say so rather than dress a guess up as a fact.

Second, almost every well-ranked article on this subject is American. American articles carry American rules. Whether Alberta restricts baiting, scent attractants, or natural cervid urine products is a question you must answer from the current Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations, published annually and available free at licence issuers, Fish and Wildlife offices, and online at albertaregulations.ca. Do not take a Michigan blogger's word for what you can pour on the ground in WMU 500. I spent years in conservation enforcement, and "I read it online" has never once ended a conversation well.

Same goes for chronic wasting disease. CWD is present in wild deer in Alberta, and it is the reason several jurisdictions elsewhere have moved on natural deer-urine lures. Alberta's mandatory head-submission areas, deadlines, and carcass transport and disposal requirements change from year to year. Check the current Guide and mywildalberta.ca before the season, every season.

The glands, one at a time

Deer carry a set of skin glands that are commonly described in the literature and hunting press. Here is what each is generally understood to do, with an honest note on how firm the ground is.

Forehead glands. Between the eyes and the antler bases. These are the glands a buck grinds into a sapling when he rubs. Activity is widely described as seasonal, heaviest in mature bucks around the pre-rut, which fits what you see on the ground — rub lines appearing in a burst in October. Well accepted in outline; the details of what the secretion communicates are less settled.

Preorbital glands. The tear-duct area, just ahead of the eye. A deer can open and close these. You will see bucks press the preorbital area against a licking branch. Often described as a marking gland, though some researchers think its main job is ordinary eye maintenance and the marking is secondary.

Nasal glands. Inside the nostrils. Poorly understood. Possibly involved in lubricating the nose, possibly in depositing scent on branches. I would not build a strategy on them.

Interdigital glands. Between the toes of each hoof. Every step a deer takes leaves a small deposit. This is the one that matters most to how you hunt, because it means deer trails are chemical records, not just worn dirt. It is widely claimed that the interdigital secretion carries individual identity — that a deer can tell who walked through and roughly when. That claim is plausible and repeated everywhere, but I would treat the individual-identity part as probable rather than proven.

Tarsal glands. The tufted patches on the inside of the hocks. The most talked-about gland and the one most often oversimplified. The usual explanation is that the smell comes from bacteria acting on urine the deer deposits during rub-urination — standing hunched, urinating over the tarsals and rubbing them together — rather than from the gland's own secretion alone. That mechanism is standard in the literature but worth verifying if you plan to quote it. What is not in dispute is that a rutting buck's tarsals get dark, wet and pungent, and that both sexes and all ages rub-urinate.

Metatarsal glands. On the outside of the lower hind leg. In whitetails, function is genuinely unclear and some researchers consider them largely vestigial. Anyone who tells you exactly what metatarsals do is ahead of the science.

Preputial gland. Associated with the male sheath. Sometimes claimed to play a role in scrape marking. Evidence is weak. I leave it alone.

Add saliva to the list. When a deer mouths and licks an overhanging branch, it is leaving salivary scent along with whatever the forehead and preorbital glands contributed.

Scrapes and licking branches

This is where the glands stop being trivia and start being tactics.

A scrape is not really the pawed dirt. The pawed dirt is the part we notice. The communication hub is the licking branch hanging over it, usually about head height, chewed and bent and worked over by every deer that visits. Forehead, preorbital and salivary scent all end up on that branch, and multiple deer of both sexes use it, not just the buck you are hoping for. Plenty of experienced hunters and researchers argue the branch carries more information than the ground does.

What that means for Alberta parkland hunting is practical. When you find a scrape, look up. A scrape without a good licking branch is often a one-off. A scrape under a heavily chewed branch on a field edge, a fenceline, or a bush corner between bedding and feed is a place deer return to. That is where the camera goes, and that is what you set up on — downwind, with a workable entry and exit.

And be honest about daylight. Scrape activity in our country skews heavily nocturnal. A scrape tells you a deer lives there. It does not promise you he stands over it at 9 a.m.

Using it in the field

Wind and thermals beat everything else. All the gland knowledge in the world is worthless if a deer smells your boots. In river valley country, thermals rise in the morning as the ground warms and sink in the evening as it cools, and that will override a light prevailing wind. Plan the walk in as carefully as the sit.

Mind your own trail. If interdigital scent means deer read trails, your rubber boots crossing that trail leave a message too. Walk the field, the creek, the road allowance — not the deer highway.

Mock scrapes. Making a scrape under an existing good licking branch is a low-cost way to concentrate camera activity. Deer clearly do use them.

Commercial scents. I am cautious. Under real hunting conditions, evidence that bottled tarsal or estrous scent reliably changes deer behaviour is thinner than the packaging suggests. More importantly, before you carry any lure into the bush in Alberta, confirm in the current Guide whether it is permitted where you are hunting. I am not going to tell you it is legal or that it is not — I am going to tell you to look it up in the current-year Guide, because that is the only answer that protects you.

After the shot

Tracking a hit deer is scent work in reverse. Blood is the obvious sign, but the deer is also leaving interdigital scent, and if you lose blood, the trail itself, the direction of travel, and terrain funnels usually get you back on track faster than casting in circles.

Then field dressing, and the old argument: do the tarsal glands taint the meat? The traditional advice is to cut them off first and never touch them. Plenty of experienced butchers say the taint comes from handling — tarsal scent on your hands and knife, transferred to meat — not from the glands themselves. I lean toward that view, and my practice is simple: leave the tarsals attached, keep your hands and blade off them, and if you do touch them, clean up before you go back to the carcass. Either way, careful, clean work matters more than the ritual.

And before any of this: you need to be legally tagged up. A hunting licence and the applicable tags must be carried on your person while hunting big game, per the general hunting regulations.
